First of all... My site is not close to being finished... I merely used some bits and pieces of free themes to build one that i am not convinced will be the one I will use upon launch.
To access the site itself go to www.zonaxbox.com/index.php
I would like it that someone from here who makes custom desings, contacts me over e-mail because I want to be able to explain what I want for a custom theme and hopefully that they can do it... I find your prices reasonable and I would like to see what you can do for my portal.
My portal is not new, its nearly 3 yrs old. Its the oldest portal for xbox gaming news in spanish and most of the people who visit us is from Latin America, Puerto Rico and Spain.
There are many sites in english, but amongst the ones in spanish we are on the top floor. Which is why I would like to have a custom theme made under custom specifications for our site relaunch.
So in the meantime, critizise what you see, and give me all the suggestions you can.
Thanks;
Gilberto Palau

Nice looking site. The theme is clean and generally well thought out. I like the green tone and I especially like the header.
What I think needs to be rethought is the stuff at the top of the center block. You have a calendar, shoutbox and Lista De Puntos. This gives you two calendars when only 1 is really needed. Remove the center one. Move the shoutbox to a side box and really you could get rid of the Lista as you have another one at the bottom on the right. Currently it gives a very clunky, unbalanced first impression. You also dont need two login blocks. The staff status one is the one that I would keep.
By removing those three little blocks this would put the Welcome screen back to the top of the center block which is a good place to have it for people first accessing your site. It needs something and Im not sure what to grab a bit more attention, it needs to be a bit more noticeable.
If you need something else for the center then consider putting the forums summary in there with multiblock if that is available.
Overall, I like the site but it does need a few changes. |

1. The green portion of the header section, with its horizontal lines and gradient effect, is attractive, especially with the way it seems to allow for a glow or aura to emanate from the top edge of the silver and gray header graphics.
2. The green background color used in the left and right side blocks is bright, but compared to the green in the header section, it comes across as plain and boring.
3. The off-purple color of the links is a mixed package. On the one hand, this color provides a good degree of contrast compared against the background colors on which it rests. Contrast enhances legibility and readability of text. On the other hand, the color is not coordinated with the predominantly green color of the site, and as such, it clashes with the aesthetics. This is bad, of course, since it negatively impacts how the site looks.
4. Having two calendars on the same page constitutes unnecessary duplication, and one of them should be eliminated, accordingly. Due to the size of the calendar, I think that this particular feature is better suited for either the left or right blocks, rather than for the center block. Elimination of unnecessary duplication enhances space usage efficiency.
5. The horizontal row of links that run across the top of the page, just below the logo, have text which is too small. Also, I would recommend elimination of the "all capital letters," where these links are concerned. These links also fail to offer any mouseover effects, which I think is a negative for both them, specifically, and for the page, generally.
6. The entire curved silver graphics at the top of the page, the ones that encompass and surround the main logo for the site, while they make the front page (index.php) look "cleaner," they also imbue the page with a greater sense of "boredom." They are clean, but unexciting. The XBox, however, embodies excitement, and I think that the look and feel of the web site should translate and embody that excitement. The current look simply fails to accomplish this, even though it does have certain positive high points.
7. The 3D ZX logo is not unattractive, but it is simply not up to the task at hand of making the site look and feel exciting, all by itself. The www.zonaxbox.com text, which is directly beneath the 3D ZX logo, does not help matters any, by presenting a dull and boring use of fontwork. The web address is legible, however, so that is a plus, but it is a prime example of how individual items collectively add up in a negative way so as to rob a web site of excitement and aesthetic appeal.
8. The page is severely deficient in the use of imagery (graphics) to brighten up and entice the site visitor with. If the XBox, itself, were designed in the same way that the web site is, to be virtually devoid of imagery, no one would buy it. A video game oriented audience is use to being treated to visual impacts. It is less a question of whether text or graphics is right for web sites as it is a question of what is the right ratio of each for YOUR particular web site. An injection of imagery with precision can imbue your site with far more impact and power, from the site visitor's perspective.
9. The page (index.php), overall, does a fairly good job of using contrast as an element in web page design. Also, used properly, green can be a magnificent tool for injecting life into a web page. Used improperly, as in the present case of your web site, and it can leave the viewer viewing it to be the web site equivalent of grass - just common and growing everywhere.
10. The "Lista De Puntos" is more unnecessary duplication. One of them should be eliminated.
11. The smilies of the shout box should be moved from the right edge of the shout box to just below the shot box, and then the shout box should be moved to either the right block or left block from the center block. Either that, or you should artificially inflate the size values that controls the shout box's display.
12. The small 3D logo graphic in the footer section is not sufficient to save the footer from the eye of scrutiny. The footer section, in its current form, is nothing more than a large, boring space. This is an ineffective and inefficient use of the footer space.
13. The left menu currently suffers from overpopulation of links. You need to either consolidate and eliminate some of these links, or you need to move some of them to other parts of the page, so as to break down the mass of links that the current design imposes upon the site visitor.
14. The "Connectar" and "Iniciar" buttons have the standard gray color as their background colors, and fail to be color-coordinated with the rest of the site. At present, they are just typical and standard buttons, adding nothing in the way of ornamentation nor excitement to the page. On the plus side, at least they are noticeable. On the negative side, they are simply unattractive and need reworked.
15. The font used in the announcements just drown in the drab green background of the center block. This font is too small, and lacks any use of impacting, such as bold text, to make it stand out and grab the viewer. The result? My eye just wants to pass over your announcements without reading them at all. An announcement is worthless if no one ever reads it. In order to get them to want to read them, your announcements need to stand out and impact the human eye more.
16. On a positive note, your site seems, for the most part, to have an "orderly feel" about it. This effect, however, is utterly truncated by the overall bland manner in which this sense of order is brought before the human eye.
17. I speak English, not Spanish, so even though I know that your site caters to a predominantly Spanish-speaking user base, the absence of an immediately recognizable option to switch to at least some English language pages throws up a big red flag, from this visitor's perspective. Most XBox buyers probably do not speak Spanish, and furthermore, video games present an ideal opportunity to bridge traditional language barriers, since anyone of any language can play and enjoy a video game or video game competitions. As such, I think that your site, in particular, would be well suited to add an increased focus in the English language area. Any time that I visit any web site done in a foreign language, the very first thing I look for is an immediately identifiable way to make at least part of the site, its menus if nothing else, visible in English.
18. The graphics used in your topics/stories/announcements are boring. They are also mismatched for your site's overall reason for existing. They presently look like mere place holders, doing nothing more than taking up space. Your announcement about the X-Men, for example, that currently adorns the front page of the site, its topic graphic would be better served if it were a picture of the X-Men. The more that each individual component on your web page projects the image that you want the site to project, then the more that the "feel" of your web site will increase and be enhanced, accordingly.
19. The icons for your left block menu need to be revamped. This is another good example of where more attention-to-detail could really pay off for your site, in terms of look and feel.
20. The index.php page makes virtually no use of geometry to break down masses of space. The end result is that your web page is left with a very traditional square feel to it. Even the very large curved gray and silver graphics at the top do not really cause a break from this traditional feel.
21. If the Xbox played games, but none of them produced any sound, would you buy it? My point is this: Your web site makes no real use of the sound medium to entice or excite users.
22. Even though the curves of the silver and gray graphics at the top are the only real departure from the overall square feel of the page, if I was going to eliminate any one, singular item, it would be the curved gray and silver graphics. If the same curves had been injected elsewhere on the page, it might give the site an entirely different feel. If, however, you were to retain those graphics, I think that the page would be better served if you inverted them, so that the logo dipped down into the site, rather than curving up and away from the information contained in the left and center blocks.
23. All in all, I think that the site could look and feel a lot better than it does right now in its current form. I would rate the current "look" of the site higher than I would the current "feel" of the site.
24. Normally, I analyze only the front page or index.php page of a web site. In the case of your site, however, I have decided to dig a little deeper. As such, I do like the page_bg.gif file used as the background for the edges of the forum areas.
25. The very large size of the individual message blocks in the forum is a very nice touch. I would encourage you to retain something of similar size, where the individual message blocks of the forum are concerned, if you change your forum theme, also.
26. The buttons of the forum pages are much nicer than the buttons on the index.php page. That said, I think that they are in need of a rework, also. The underline mouseover effect in the forum buttons just does not cut the mustard. A better mouseover effect would enhance the aesthetic appeal of the forum pages, I think.
27. The gray background of the message box interiors I dislike for your web site. With the right color-coordination, I think that, in conjunction with the impressive size of your message blocks, your forums would really enjoy a substantial and noticeable increase in impact value, where the human eye of your site's visitors are concerned.
28. The orange and yellow colors of your gallery section make the site seem less boring. But, even still, I think that the colors are not coordinated, and clash with one another in a negative way. They also clash with the paleness of the background colors that sit behind the images in the gallery, themselves.
29. The small, black lettered "zonaXbox" that appears at the top of the center block along the left edge adds nothing to the site's aesthetics. It needs to be reworked or removed. If you intend to retain it, then it should be centered in that green bar in which it rests.
30. The center block, by and large, yields a large degree of wasted space. Inefficient use of space detracts from a web site, from the standpoint of aesthetics.
31. In summation, contrary to what Ray suggests above, I believe that the site needs more than just a few changes. Accordingly, I would recommend a radical redesign of the site. |
