1 Post subject: [solved]WowHorde pnphpbb2 has second logo, and admin panel b  PostPosted: Jul 22, 2005 - 03:46 PM

I'm a recent wowHorde theme purchaser, err donator? Smile The site is shaping up!
I'm running PostNuke 0.750b and autotheme lite.

Got the WowHorde Theme installed and have a few issues with it.

The site is here: http://www.palatinoguard.com

Current dealios:
1. A second Logo and menu bar is present.
2. Hover-over on the text area of the second logo bar is causing an ugly graphic effect.
3. When using the wowHorde theme, the link (found at bottom of page) to the admin panel goes to an errant link.

===============

1. The phpBB logo area is appearing below the site (postnuke) logo region. What do I need to modify to minimize the second block of logos ? This area is also behaving oddly, I'm not sure if it's best to drop that entire area as the
[FAQ Search Memberlist Usergroups Profile Messages Logout] buttons are displaying.... and may be needed. It would be nice to drop the "your clan" JPG and leave the lower row if that's possible. Ideally the option to fiddle with this area would be most helpful, what do I edit to adjust this area please?

2. May need to eyeball the site [a]http://www.palatinoguard.com[/a], I'm not really sure how to describe this problem. The forums menu bar (horizontal text mentioned above) looks good at first. Mouse over it, and the hover effect is trashing the graphics. I'm getting the same effect in IE and firefox. It's a minor problem really, but I'd like to hang on to the ability to get to the board PROFILES area for the time being. (I need it to switch back and forth while testing!) (versus taking this bar off the page altogether.)

I'm not sure I'll keep this horizontal menu since the overall site style has one above that. I like the functionality, but esoterically... you get the idea.

Speaking of esoterics! I LOVE how the Ogre graphic background fills in behind the forum areas, the look is GREAT - I was REALLY psyched the first time the board style filled in and the Ogre background graphic filled in around the text.

3. I moved my admin login to the new theme, the admin panel link at the bottom of the page is mis-guided. I just used the profile (with funky mouse-over) link to change my profile back to the default blue, then used that page's link to the admin panel to get back in for admin work. Would be helpful to not have to do this switch for admin work - and for now, I'll just use the blue theme for admin stuff.

Thanks
da

OMG!!!! Nice looking site but the forums are, well, OMG!!!!

It looks like two themes laid over top of one another. Where did you install the theme for the forums on the server? I have never seen anything like that before so most likely Master Mars will have to deal with this.

In the meantime could you post up exactly where you put the PNphpBB2 theme files?

First off, full disclosure here, when I've "messed up"... a theme - and I did installing the original POSTNUKE Theme, I've been a bad software engineer. I have used my admin account to test the theme.

When it doesn't work, I delete the POSTNUKE theme folder and COPY over the ExtraLight folders in ./themes folder. Basically I 've been copying ExtraLight over to wowHorde while I was figuring out what I did wrong. I dunno what effect that might have had on the postnuke side.

Then when I installed ./modules/PNphpNN2/wowHorde, I mistakenly created an additional wowHorde/wowHorde folder. Corrected this with a cp -r * ../

Long story short, you might could say I'm poking around and it's not been a picture-perfect install.

At this point I have this for the phpbb folder theme hierarchy:

am also experimenting with the PNphpbb Configuration page - Enable Theme Matching "yes" and "no" provide the same results (second logo present, hover-over effect, and admin link all not-so-good.

Was I mistaken in understanding that the PHPBB ZIP embedded in the postnuke ZIP was to be exploded and intalled under the modules/PNphpBB2/ folder? Read up on pnphbb.com site, seemed the right spot...
http://www.pnphpbb.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=ForumNews&file=index and esp. good for support, the pnphpbb ""Styles/Themes" forum (http://www.pnphpbb.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewforum&f=47

I've also disabled ALL Xanthia themes, and in that configuration, have told Xanth to recompile themes (stored in db) just in case I was farting around earlier in the installation and selected a Xanthia theme. (The initial wowHorde install was, uh... sorta messy. I blew it all away and reinstalled... dont think I had too much Xanthia/AutoTheme confusion this time around).

Found the topic over at pnphpbb2 that I used to realize I had first put the pnphpbb style in the wrong place. Charming chaps over there, appreciate your all's willingness to help, by the way. They seem... indiferent towards folks struggling with the install. When I'm all done, holler if you want some help from a seasoned techie who's new to postnuke/pnphpbb/themes to sanitize docs for readability for us "normal people." Smile

http://www.pnphpbb.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=4597

Kind of bugs me that the pnphpbb authors and support help on their own site sort of state they only officially support the built-in theme. I thought one of the finer points of these CMSs was to have this sort of flex-ah-bility.

Ray,

I'm happy enough that I could almost kiss you, but so frustrated with this process that I'm sure I won't.

Your question about the location of the PNphpBB style led me to draw an obvious conclusion... that I had probably put them somewhere WRONG.

I managed to figure out how to get another style to work... albeit clunky looking...

And your question sent me back over to pnphpbb.com where they (I hate this ) say they "only support the use of the default theme.

ok ok sue me. The ZIP file I got from you guys and my fat fingers just didn't get along at first. The name on the ZIP file might have mislead me? I think this is right...that the style name in the main postnuke theme area... and the style name used in the PNphpBB2 module section cannot be the same name.

Long story short, I just re-ran the installation on a second virtual server. Despite not really getting the board to work there, I did have a nearly-activated site together. On this second virtual server, I:

1. Intalled postnuke
2. set owner/perms; browsed to install.php, ran installation process.
3. removed install.php, removed install folder.
4. created a test user. This helps. Smile
5. Installed the PNphpBB2_12a module. Unzipping the files to ./modules/PNphpBB2
6. In browser, under administration/modules/regenerate, initialized the PNphpBB2 module.
7. Unzipped, FTPed AutoTheme 0.8 to ./modules/AutoTheme
8. set modes, owners, groups.
9. Activated AutoTheme. Not sure how, every time it's a bit buggy. Somwhere between activate, deactivate, setting perms, and using my "other" virtual server's link to the AutoTheme admin console (AutoTheme's Administration Icon wasn't showing up), I got AutoTheme to work. I'm not catholic and I said a Hail Mary at this point.
10. Went back to PNphpBB2 modules 'cause now the dang thing wasn't working.
11. set owners, perms, modes again on everything. Noted to self, "getting sloppy here"
12. Installed the Style Mars sent. It's simply confusing until you've installed it four times and read the install docs (no kidding) for all these modules some dozen-plus times. Also recognized my own stubbornness for "trying to make it work" versus "doing precisely what the docs say." (this helped a lot I think).
13. Now I had the second virtual server (it's at www2.palatinoguard.com), PNphpBB2 installed, AutoThemes, and Mars' vunderful HordeTheme in place. Using test account (not admin, learned many times over.... "Testing Themes with the Admin account may cause a dry, itching sensation... everywhere").
14. Board not working.

But at this point I realized the answer to your original question.... with regards to my first and my second server, were two different answers.

So I backed up the first server. cp -r /modules/PNphpBB2 from second to first.

1st site didnt like this.
But hey, I had *two* sets of control menus. One for Post Nuke, another for PNphpBB. Using the second bar, I set my profile in the board to use the default style.

Busted.

Used my tar file, and out of frustration, did tar -xvf /backupfile to my first virtual server root.

And now it all works. <lol>

*smooch*.

/me wipes off the wet smooch........ Laughing

I have read through you dummies guide and the procedures that you used to resolve your glitches. An interesting read to say the least. A couple of things that I should comment to.

1> In life there are long roads and short roads to the final destination. It seems to me that you took the long road.

2> The authors of cms programs such as PNphpBB2 are well within their rights to only support their core program and the theme that they support as their main thrust is to improve the core and make things better, easier and or safer for us the end users.

3> I cant help but wonder if "PSAK" could have made your life a lot easier.

Your site is looking much better now than it did when you first started this thread. I enjoyed reading your installation guide and appreciate your taking the time to author it and post it. Though I have to admit that you lost me a few times in it. It does, however, lead the new user to a better understanding of the process involved in getting a postnuke installation going. What it has caused me to address is the fact that we dont have a tutorial of our own here at PortalThemes in the FAQ's that Im aware of. We should maybe have one for both the initial installation and some for the installation of the forums and other popular mods such as ATLite etc. Im not trying to take away from your work in the least just saying that we should have one of our own as well.

My thanks for your work and trust me when I say that I will not be sharing the information about the "smooch" with my wife... Laughing

Gah..
Sorry about the hassle with this, just picked a bad week of the year to have problems. Smile
One last thing you can do, make a copy of

modules/PNphpBB2/Templates/PNTheme/images/wow2/icon_mini_login.gif

And name it

modules/PNphpBB2/Templates/PNTheme/images/wow2/icon_subforum_off.gif

That will create an icon for the subcategory mod you installed.

No arguments here on taking the long road. Smile

And yes, we'll keep the smooch away from the wives. lol. Thanks guys. Have just under a dozen registered users and already several genuine compliments on how nice the site is - I appreciate your work!

Holler at me on e-mail if you want a novice to proof/edit/comment on a real tutorial, I probably won't be checking back in here too much now that the theme is solid.

good catch on that icon mars, got it, thanks. and hey, everyone gets a vacation!
