My first impression of this theme is that it is a mixed bag, though there are a number of things that I like about this theme.
1. There is a lot of geometric variety to be discovered in this theme, although, simultaneously, there is also a lot that is standard-fare traditional at the same time.
2. You have returned to injecting detail into your borderwork, which has traditionally been one of your strong suits in theme design. If you treated all of your theme aspects as you do your borderwork handicraft, on those occasions when you create themes with nice borderwork, then your themes would take on a whole new dimension of excellence. While I don't think that this is one of your prettiest themes, I do thing that it is one of your more interesting themes, due to the artistic goulash that you have brewed up this time around.
3. I especially like the borderwork of the right blocks. The jagged edge effect, combined with the ultra-thin diagonal striping, really helps convince the human eye that the right blocks are not imbued with that common place squared-off feeling. The right blocks are the equivalent of thematic croissants - nice, little tasty pieces of the overall theme.
4. The left block is treated to less of a similar effect, but it simply isn't as persuasive to the human eye. My eye buys the right blocks, but not the left blocks.
5. The left block also enjoys the same diagonal treatment as the right block. These also follow suit in the center block. It is not a critical issue, but generally speaking, the left and right sides should be opposite of one another.
6. The color scheme won't win any awards in my book, and while the green textwork in the header and horizontal menu is a nice break from your traditional addiction to gray colors, I do like the fact that you appear to be branching out on the mingling of colors into your themes.
7. I like the glow effect on the text in the header, but I dislike the text, itself, both the size and the font. For this particular theme and this particular header, I would recommend a much larger and thicker font, so that the header textwork just looms large and is imposing to the human eye. You possess a dreadful tendency to starve your themes, where your application of textwork to your themses is concerned. If you ever learn to indulge yourself, where textwork is concerned, I think that you will ultimately hold the potential to become a consummate master of the trade. You spend lots of time crafting details into many of your themes, only to then come along behind yourself and skimp on the text. The nature of text in thematic design is that it embodies power - power which is yours for the claiming, since you are the one crafting the theme. You display an entrenched hesitancy to firmly wield the Sword of Text to hew out unparalleled works of art, where your themes are concerned.
8. I like the center blocks, and while I can't help but think that they could be improved upon with relative ease, in their current incarnation I still like them very much.
9. The borderwork along the left and right edges of the Forum Statistics block in the center block area is arguably the single strongest item to be found on this theme. The top and bottom edges of this same block have a more simple borderwork, but it works well with the more detailed left and right edge borderwork.
10. The top two blocks in the right block section do not render that which they display in a centered manner. This has the end effect of ruining the appearance of the right blocks. Why go to all of that trouble creating the nice looking right blocks, only to then ruin the overall visual appeal by having those blocks displayed aligned to the left, rather than to the center?
11. The red wires in the header are about as imaginative as a clump of mud. Wiring is an area where your skills are severely deficient. The small triple wire rings below them, I like, though. They are not spectacular, by any means, nor do they chart any new ground, aesthetically speaking, but they do look OK.
12. The horizontal menu below the header, I like what you attempted to do with the first letter in each of those links. However, while you get an A for effort, where those links are concerned, you ultimately fail to deliver, in an aesthetic sense. This is traceable, I believe, back to your steadfast hedging on taking up the text gauntlet.
13. The area that the horizontal menu rests upon I like very much. The narrowing of the borders, where the triple rings reside on both sides, works really well with both this theme and this overall choice of header design.
14. The bold white text, especially in the left block Main Menu, works well with this color scheme.
15. The decision to make the roll-over effect of the links change to gray, while it works with this theme, is nonetheless unimpressive. On a dark theme, links with rollover effects should change to a brighter color, not a more pale color. Especially with your innovation by going with green text elsewhere in the header of the theme leaves me feeling disappointed that you did not try something a tad more imaginative, where the rollover color for links is concerned.
16. The very thin edging on the far left edge of the left blocks I like more than its darker counterpart along the far right edge of the right blocks. The left edging stands out more, and has more impact, whereas the right edging seems to just die away.
17. The border of the header graphic has some texture, which is good, but your themes often end up leaving me feeling as though you are on a texture-poor diet. It is worth noting, I feel, that texture is one of the surest routes to making a theme stand out and feel original.
18. The footer area appears to be a small dead zone, of sorts. On most themes, that wouldn't work well, but the dark colors allow it to work on this theme, just the same. You get no points for innovation, but neither do any get subtracted for substandard effect, where the footer area is concerned.
19. Normally, I gravitate towards a textured background graphic of some sort, where your themes are concerned. This particular theme, however, is not negatively impacted by your reliance upon a traditional smooth gray finish.
20. This theme gets decent marks for me, where legibility is concerned. For the most part, the text font sizes are back to normal. This is a disappointment, of sorts, a small one, but this theme has sufficient color contrast to make the text legible.
21. The small orange dots in the right blocks and center blocks has a positive effect on the theme's overall appearance. The left blocks not having this same graphic flourish is a negative for the left blocks section.
22. The dark greenish color of the title bars is not anything grand, but it works well with the other use of grays and greens on this theme.
23. The left and right block title bars and bottom bars have small indentations, which follow off of the diagonal border work, and this is a nice, but small, visual plus.
24. At the top and bottom edges of the Forum Statistics block, there is a slight glow caused by a wash effect. I think that this is a very nice touch. It is much more subdued than the wash effect used in the header area, which I and disenfranchised by. The wash effect in the header is too pronounced, and it has been repeated many times over to the point of being done to death. It worked in its day, but its day has passed. A nice rough rock textured effect might work better in the header area, rather than this wash gradient effect.
25. The vertical border on the right side of the header isn't ugly, but what, exactly, is it supposed to be accomplishing? Whatever it is, it fails to do anything more than just sit there looking out of place.
26. At the top center edge of the header, there is a border effect of some sort that then disappears as the eye moves from center to the right edge. It could have been a nice effect, had you done something different with it. Yes, it provides additional geometric variety, but at what cost? In its current configuration, it is an eyesore. It whispers promises of what could have been, but apparently did not remain true to the original vision which inspired it. I am referring to the teeth at the top center. The effect to the left of it, however, I like very much, that depression, of sorts.
In summation, it's not a bad looking theme, but it could stand do with some additional refinement. |

I just got back from Tennessee, and like the changes that you made to the header. At a glance, though, I don't really see much else that has been changed.
The header changes, alone, though, make a big positive difference, I think.
Overall, the text colors work pretty good, I think, though the mouseover color for links text should not fade to gray, I don't think. |
