Hi I'm interested in a quote for a custom theme for my Batman related website. My url is www.defenderofgotham.net

I checked out the theme you guys created at http://www.junkphreak.com/index.php and I think those colors are exactly what I'm looking for in a theme.

Please email me and I can go into more detail. defenderofgotham@yahoo.com

Thanks,

defenderofgotham

I have visited your web site before. I just now visited it again, after reading your posting here.

Batman, as the conceptual character upon which to build your site around, is, unquestionably, one of the most colorful and most well-known characters that you could have chosen.

If you are going to opt for a custom theme, I certainly think that you've chosen a good character around which to build it.

Batman, however, is a multi-facted character. He operates in a wide range of environments.

The color scheme and layout for your site, while not ugly, simply do not do justice to Batman, in my opinion. I commend you for looking to enhance Batman's image, by going with a custom theme.

I wish you well with your site, and look forward to seeing what you and Mars eventually come up with, where a custom theme for your site is concerned.

Thanks GlueBeard for checking out my site and I have to totally agree with you on the blandness of the current state of it.

I've asked Mars about giving it a black-dark grey look with a rusted metal industrialized feel intermingled in with it to give it a feel of Batman's home, Gotham City.

As for the site I've been doing it since April of 1998 and have been employed by Fandom.com and Cinescape.com to have my site on theirs, so this will be my first big facelift out of my own pocket and after seeing the work that Mars has accomplished on those other sites I've no doubt that he'll give my Batman site a definite Dark Knight feel. BTW Mars: if you need any Batman graphics for the creation of the theme contact me and I'll send some over.

Dave,

I am a fan of the old TV series, and I also enjoyed the Batman movies, some more than others. I don't think that any of them accurately capture the core "feel" of Batman, though.

If I may suggest, Batman is often equated with black and dark gray, and metallic or rusted metallic looks, where various fan sites are concerned, as far as sites that I have came across from time to time while web browsing.

However, Batman was a product of emotion. He traces his origin to the murder of his parents, if memory serves me correctly. Hence, the dark essence of the "Dark Knight" personna, the nexus of the caped crusader's grim aura.

Most every Batman related web site that I have been to tend to plaster themselves with images and symbols of Batman. Yet, to me, at least, for all of their imagery, these very same sites often end up leaving an awful lot to be desired, as far as me - the site visitor - walking away with feeling as if Batman, himself, would have approved of their tribute to him.

What you might want to consider, as far as the approach for your web site is concerned, is to do things differently from the standard fare Batman sites that populate the World Wide Web. It might cost a little more, over the long run, but I think that the end result might well be worth it. How you choose to bring Batman's world to fruitition, where a web site is concerned, will, I think, make a big difference in the degree to which your site is a success.

A typical approach to a theme for a web site will certainly lend a new aesthetic appeal to your site, especially to the front page, and perhaps to the forums, depending upon whether you intend to theme one or both.

But that, alone, I don't think, will really break the mold.

I really am hard pressed to think of a better conceptual character around which to take the theming approach to the next level.

When I or others visit your site, after you make whatever changes that you envision for it, what is it that we will see and feel? You haven't really outlined here, though perhaps you did outline in e-mail to Mars, what your vision for the site actually is. I would be curious in hearing what it is, if you ever feel like sharing.

I'm a pretty simple guy and as far as the site goes, I really want something to give the visitor a memorable experience, I want them to walk away knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt that Defender of Gotham is one of the main online players of all that is Batman, quite literally I want the site to flat out kick their ass and leave a lasting impression of it. Smile

Quite honestly from what I've seen so far of what Mars has done I think it is a sure thing to accomplish the above goals.

Well, that sounds good. But, again, how - exactly - do you intend to create that impression? Yes, by relying on Mars, to a certain degree, since he will be the one actually crafting the theme, to be certain, but Mars, on the other hand, will be dependent upon you to articulate the vision that you want him to transmogrify into the theme for your site.

When a visitor to your site types in your site's url address into their web browser and his their ENTER button on their keyboard to head to your site, when they arrive, what is the perspective at their point of arrival? Are they on the outskirts of Gotham City headed into the city? Are they inside the city and high atop one of Gotham's mighty skyscrapers? Are they inside the Batmobile with Batman? Are they at the Batcave? Are they inside Wayne Manor? Do they see things as Batman sees them, or from the perspective of an invisible intruder?

Is your whole site Gotham City? Or are the forums Gotham? Or, perhaps, this component or that module or this block or that item?

I think that these are the types of questions that will be instrumental in pushing beyond the "look" of the site, and developing to a greater magnitude the "feel" of the site.

Batman is not at the cutting edge of technology. Batman IS the cutting edge of technology. I think that at least part of your site might be ideally suited to a hefty injection of Flash (not the super hero but the swf type flash), even as other parts of your site might be best handled in a manner that is bereft of Flash.

Likewise, I think that some sound effects and some animations, if done right, could greatly enhance the aesthetic and addictive appeals of your site.

Where Gotham City, proper, is concerned, I will be very interested in seeing what you and Mars come up with as your representations and envisionings of Gotham.

Batman related sites often play upon the darkness of Batman's persona by representing it via the use of dark colors on their respective sites. Conversely, Batman, as far as super hero type characters go, is a very colorful character. He is not a super hero, in the same sense that Superman is a super hero. Yet, that which elevates him into the ranks of the World's Finest (if my DC memory serves me correctly) - into the annals of super hero history - is very colorful.

When Batman is in action, he embodies excitement. He employs daunting technology, and of the most impressive sort. The Batcave, Batmobile, Utility Belt, and this and that all impress upon the spectator to Batman in action that he is a one-man army.

The World Wide Web can be a magnificent tool for taking the Batman hype to a new dimension.

More than just technology, Batman is about prowess, and even more so, Batman is intelligent, and hyper-analytical. His alter ego, of course, is super rich.

And, of course, his arch-enemies are amongst the most famous and most colorful of characters to ever adorn the pages of comics or the silver screen.

If your web site ultimately fails to convey what it is that you want it to convey, I certainly don't think that it will be because the character at the nexus of it is in some way deficient or otherwise falls short.

That said, I look forward to the unveiling of your new theme.
