I post this message in an attempt to head off any misunderstanding about the criticisms contained in my critiques of the themes that are produced by Mars, the web master of this site and icon of thematic design behind Portal Themes.

Criticism is a necessary prerequisite of improvement, and the process of critical analysis cannot occur without it.

Mars possesses an appreciation for the value that inheres in critique of his own handiwork. Such denotes a standard of excellence that is all-too-often missing on the part of a number of other theme designers in the theme design communities that populate the World Wide Web.

Properly understood, a process of ongoing critique drives the engines of improvement, by continually setting, resetting, and raising the bar and standard of excellence and superiority in theme design.

That criticism is levied against a particular theme or component of theme design should not be erroneously construed or misinterpreted as being tantamount to a given theme designer being untalented in theme design. Even the greatest artists and sculptors of all time made errors over the course of their respective careers, and not all of their individual pieces of art or sculpture are necessarily equal in scope, scale, or quality.

By being at the forefront of understanding, and incorporating, the process of critique into his overall theme design process, the ultimate winner stands to be the web master or web site operator who uses one of Mars' theme products, be they free, donation, or custom themes.

One of the quintessential and core advantages conferred upon such a theme design process is the inclusion of new perspective. By subjecting his craft of choice to the inherent prospect of criticism that new perspective can bring, Mars pushes what is termed the "quality envelope" to new boundaries.

Criticism that is watered down, to intentionally avoid making the theme designer "look bad," is worthless to both the end user and to the process of continual improvement. No one likes to be criticized, but in the endless quest to make a better mouse trap, where theme design is concerned, criticism and critical analysis can prove instrumental in giving Mars and PortalThemes.com a marked and lasting advantage against the ranks of theme design competition.

In spite of the lengths or details of my criticisms that often can and will follow from my analysis of various themes that Mars crafts from time to time in his Forge of Thematic Wonders, the bottom line is that I feel that Mars is one of the more talented theme designers for Content Management Systems that I have encountered during my time as a PostNuke web master.

Shying away from criticism is not the hallmark of the brave, but a characteristic of the thematic cowardly.

Fixing problems, shortcomings, or deficiencies cannot and will not be accomplished, unless those very same problems, shortcomings, and deficiencies are first recognized. The process of critical analysis is the primary mechanism whereby such discovery and recognition occur.

Theme designers cannot boldly go where no theme designer has gone before, by adhering to the antiquated, archaic, and false notion that criticism has no place in the process of theme crafting.

Keep this all in mind, the next time that you read my criticisms of Mars work. I don't hate Mars. I'm not his enemy. And I certainly have not ceased to be a fan and admirer of his talents, skills, and abilities, where his theme design endeavors are concerned.

Wow! Over sixteen thousand page views, since I first posted that article. It doesn't seem like three years and five days, since I wrote it. Time flies, eh?
